INJURIES

Takes seventh loss Fried (7-7) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five batters over 5.1 innings in a loss to San Francisco on Thursday.
Impact Fried gave up two runs in the second inning and another in the sixth, which was more than enough for San Francisco to hand him a defeat on a day when Atlanta's offense was shut out. The southpaw did at least manage his longest outing over his three starts since returning from the IL on Aug. 4, and this was the first time he's given up fewer than four earned runs during that span. It's unclear if the forearm issue that landed him on the injured list is still bothering him, but Fried has a 7.90 ERA over the three starts since his activation.

The Mookie Betts deal and the 15 worst MLB trades of the past decade
Fans nine in no-decision Fried did not factor into the decision in a win over Colorado on Saturday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks over five innings while striking out nine.
Impact Fried struggled out of the gate, allowing at least three baserunners in each of the first three innings, leading to five runs coming across for Colorado -- though only four would be charged to the lefty due to one of the runners advancing on a passed ball. Fried did generate 12 whiffs on the night en route to recording his highest strikeout total since June 4 against the Red Sox. However, he's now allowed four or more runs in back-to-back starts since returning from the injured list and has issued at least three walks in five of his last seven outings (dating back to June 17).

Roughed up in loss Fried (7-6) took the loss Sunday against Miami, allowing five earned runs on four hits and five walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out six.
Impact Fried (elbow) made his first start since July 11 and showed clear signs of rust, issuing five free passes and yielding five earned runs to a mediocre Marlins offense. The 30-year-old still owns a strong 3.40 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 101:39 K:BB across 111 innings this season, but it could take him a few outings to find his groove, especially with a road start in Coors Field looming next weekend.

Reinstated for Sunday's start Atlanta activated Fried (forearm) from the 15-day injured list for his start against the Marlins on Sunday.
Impact The left-hander landed on the shelf July 21 due to forearm neuritis just before he was scheduled for his first start of the second half, but it ended up being a brief absence. Fried is rejoining the rotation without a rehab assignment, so he could have some minor workload limitations in his first start since July 11 in Arizona.

Starting Sunday Fried (forearm) is expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list and start Sunday's contest versus the Marlins, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Impact Fried was rumored to have been on the cusp of a return from the IL, which now appears to be set to come to fruition Sunday. The 30-year-old has been sidelined since July 21 as a result of left forearm neuritis, but he'll make his return to the rotation after missing the minimum amount of time. Fried will look to take advantage of a Miami's sub-par lineup in Atlanta's series finale with their divisional foe.
AUGUST 3 • ROTOWIRE
Candidate to start Sunday Fried (forearm) could rejoin the Atlanta rotation Sunday against the Marlins, Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Game reports.
Impact Fried resumed throwing last weekend and threw a bullpen session without issue Wednesday. Assuming he bounces back without any concerns, it sounds like he will skip a rehab start and rejoin the Atlanta rotation this weekend. Fried has missed the last two weeks of action with left forearm neuritis.

Plays catch before Sunday's game Fried (forearm) threw a ball in the outfield before Sunday's game, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Impact The southpaw didn't appear to be bothered by the nerve inflammation in his forearm that landed him on the IL on July 21. "Max is feeling better," manager Brian Snitker said Sunday. "He'll amp up as they see fit, but just talking to him the last couple of days, I think he likes where he's at right now. No timetable or anything like that, we'll just take it day to day and see where he's at. But it sounds pretty good." It's not yet clear whether Fried will need a rehab assignment before returning to the Atlanta rotation, but with Reynaldo Lopez (forearm) leaving his start early Sunday, the team may have incentive to get Fried back as soon as possible.

Avoids major injury to forearm Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Sunday that an MRI cleared Fried of any soft-tissue damage before he was placed on the 15-day injured list with left forearm neuritis, David O'Br...
Impact Though anything forearm- or elbow-related for a pitcher always brings some level of concern, the fact that Fried avoided a ligament, tendon or muscular injury following his MRI offers hope that he'll steer clear of extended absence. At the same time, Snitker said that Fried is without an official timeline for a return from the IL and won't resume throwing until his symptoms have dissipated. Fried's injury first cropped up when he felt something in his forearm while warming up for the All-Star Game on Tuesday, but the southpaw was still able to make a one-inning appearance in relief for the National League.

Lands on injured list Atlanta placed Fried on the 15-day injured list Sunday, retroactive to July 18, due to left elbow neuritis.
Impact The 30-year-old was expected to make his first start of the second half in the next couple days against the Reds, but the elbow issue will instead send him to the injured list. Fried will be eligible to be reinstated in early August, though it wouldn't be surprising if his absence extends beyond that given the nature of the injury. Dylan Dodd was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move and could have the first crack at filling Fried's rotation spot.

Hit with tough loss Fried (7-5) took the loss against Arizona on Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out seven.
Impact Fried held the Diamondbacks scoreless over the first four innings before surrendering a leadoff shot to Eugenio Suarez to open the fifth. That would end up being the only run scored on the night, leading to the lefty taking his second straight loss. Fried has now logged quality starts in three of his last four outings, though he has just one win to show for it over that stretch. He's also issued three walks in three of his last five starts.
