Impact McCarthy's big hit of the afternoon was a two-out, bases-clearing triple that put the Diamondbacks up 8-2 in the fifth. He then added on another RBI in the eighth with a base knock to center. McCarthy now has multiple hits in three of his last four games and has racked up 11 RBI over that span. Though he's a left-handed hitter, McCarthy is slashing .360/.422/.467 over 83 plate appearances against southpaws this season and should continue to be a regular part of the starting nine when the Diamondbacks face lefties. McCarthy may have to settle for more of a part-time role, however, when the Diamondbacks face righties and have all their key outfielders available.

The outfielder finished with his second straight three-hit contest and his third multi-hit performance over his past five games. Over that span, McCarthy is batting a blistering .545 (12-for-22) with a double, two triples, five runs and two thefts.

Impact Though McCarthy doesn't have a direct path to an everyday role, Arizona has now been able to squeeze him into the lineup for five straight games while giving four days off to Joc Pederson, three to Alek Thomas and one apiece to Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel during that stretch. All of the absences for Pederson, Thomas and Carroll have come against left-handed pitching, so McCarthy at least looks to be viewed as a short-side platoon option, even though he's a left-handed hitter himself. McCarthy has helped his case for holding down a semi-regular role by going 9-for-18 with a stolen base, four runs and three RBI over the previous four contests.

It marked the outfielder's first five-hit game of the season and he brought his season average up from .269 to .285 with the performance. For the month he's batting .317 (13-for-41) with three RBI, eight runs scored and two stolen bases. However, he's also recorded just three extra-base hits since June 16.
